Dr. Pain on Nutritional Deficiencies Gone Wild |

By now many of you know I am a Health Psychologist in private practice working with pain and weight loss surgery patients at Miami Valley Hospital. My recent review of the weight loss literature found several articles on the effects of nutritional deficiencies in patients following Bariatric surgery. For our purposes I will consider this group a sort of experimental group who’s experiences may be something we cyclist can indirectly benefit from. The article I want to highlight was written by Liz Goldenberg and comes from the Obesity Care News, December 2008 V(2), #4. p14-16.
In summary: The article highlights the importance of taking vitamins and dietary supplements for those who are dieting, may not take in the necessary nutrients through foods and more natural means, and those who’s biological system may be otherwise compromised. Here is how some specific nutritional deficiencies can harm you the cyclist.

As many of you know I am a Health Psychologist in private practice covering both Pain and Bariatric services at Miami Valley Hospital. I recently had the opportunity to attend a nutrition seminar in Chicago where it was reinforced that "you are what you eat". The following is summarized from a presentation by Julie M. Janeway and Karen J. Sparks. This article is not geared toward specific nutrition for cycling, physical strength and recovery, but more for improving your mental health. This article is for those that rely on directional markers and not full maps. However, it should contain enough information to get all of you started toward improving your mental shape this winter. As always, the forthcoming Part 2 sequel will contain more of the back story.

One of the benefits of riding for Team Dayton is the opportunity to ride with teammates. For most of us it's time to ride with friends, compete for King of the Mountain, or sprint for a city limit sign. If you are new to racing it's a chance to push yourself physically and learn something from more senior riders.
Detailed below are regularly scheduled rides. Not all of them are officially sanctioned 'Team' rides....

I do not pretend to know very much about cycling, racing or even most sports. But I do know something about the emotional and physical challenges of self-improvement, getting stronger and overcoming adversity. I have never met any one as famous as Lance Armstrong. But I daily work with survivors of all types and those who set the standards in their fields. I may not always "walk the walk or talk the talk" and be the best role model that I can. But I have studied Flow Theory "being in the zone", goal setting, meditation, nutrition, aging, depression, anger management, sleep disorders, addictions, performance anxiety and pain disorders amongst other topics. I have no intention of being the Team Dayton Psychologist or Coach. But, it is my firm belief that as a team we all have areas of expertise and experiences to share that others can profit from. Please join me in a pace line toward self-improvement. Feel free to add to the comments and suggestions you see below. The following are not ground breaking ideas, but hopefully provide some impetus to get us started on being better.
